New Mexico Music Awards

The air was full of excitement and anticipation at the Marriot Pyramid Hotel on Sunday evening, May 20, for the New Mexico Music Awards. They were all there; some 350 guests, movers and shakers of our music industry all dressed up in their own special way. All different kinds of music and musicians were represented. We have a much varied and diverse music scene here in New Mexico and I’m pleased to be part of it.

I’m proud to be working on a regular basis playing music, doing what I love, and am passionate about. I love performing, being on stage, and sharing my passion. It’s particularly pleasing when a song I wrote touches or sparks a thought or feeling in someone. To be recognized for a job well done is something we all relish.

So when I was honored for the Best Western Song with Just a Guitar I was happier than a kid at Christmas. This song was my Mothers favorite of my songs and that made this award extra special. Mom passed away in August and I miss her dearly, and every day.

She had a profound influence on me and a very positive one. She taught me to sing! I was always harmonizing with her; in church or just around the house. She had a beautiful voice and was always singing. Mother was a good person and a happy person. She loved to paint and to sing and was quite good at both.

My new CD has several of her oil painting represented in the liner notes, so I could share her art with all of you. I dedicated my new record to her, and I dedicate this award to her.

Mother, you set me on this path to sing from my heart at a very early age and I’m grateful. I’m grateful to you for so many things. Don’t you think it’s nice your song won? You didn’t rig this thing did you? Of course not you’d never do something like that
